The Abia State Government on Thursday held a state burial service in honour of renowned evangelist, Rev. Uma Ukpai, at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia.
Speaking at the event, Governor Alex Otti urged Nigerians to live purposeful lives that would earn them positive remembrance after death.
“The challenge is for all of us. What would people say on a day like this, when it is our turn?” the governor said.
Otti noted that the state chose to honour the late cleric in recognition of his immense contributions to Abia State, Nigeria, and the global Christian community.
“Our decision to honour him is in our character of giving honour to whom honour is due,” he added.
The governor also extended condolences to the family, encouraging them not to grieve without hope, while expressing confidence in the promise of resurrection for believers.
Also present at the event was the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, represented by his deputy, Akon Eyakenyi. He described the late Ukpai as a visionary who lived a life worthy of emulation and encouraged Nigerians to draw inspiration from his legacy.
In a tribute, the National Secretary of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Mosy Madugba, described the deceased as a global voice and unifier of gospel ministers, noting that the fellowship honoured him by placing its flag on his coffin.
Delivering the sermon, the President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Francis Wale Oke, emphasised the importance of righteous living, stating that the late cleric exemplified a life of holiness and dedication to the gospel.
Rev. Uma Ukpai, who died at the age of 80, is remembered for his decades-long evangelistic work and impact across Nigeria and beyond.
