The traditional ruler of Umunnato Autonomous Community in Item, Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, Eze Innocent Kalu Mba, has apologised over a viral video in which he was heard invoking death on voters who would not support the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, in the 2027 election.

In the video circulated last week, the monarch was heard saying, “I will call a meeting because of this election and I will tell the people if you don’t vote for Benjamin Kalu, the land will strike you dead.”

However, in an apology issued on Thursday, Eze Mba said his choice of words was “capable of being misunderstood” and did not represent his actual intentions.

The monarch read the apology from his mobile phone in the presence of some officials of Bende Local Government Area.

He also clarified that he remained firmly supportive of the administration of Abia State Governor, Alex Chioma Otti.

According to him, his responsibilities as a traditional ruler include praying for the governor as well as the peace, unity and continued development of Abia State.

He stressed that his support for the Otti administration “remains unwavering.”

Addressing the controversy generated by the video, Eze Mba said he was deeply surprised by the impression created by the statement circulating on social media.

“The statement attributed to me does not reflect my true intentions or my deep respect for the governor and his administration. I could never deliberately make a remark intended to undermine or embarrass a government that I wholeheartedly support,” he stated.

The traditional ruler said that, on sober reflection, he recognised that his words could have been misinterpreted and expressed regret over any anxiety or misunderstanding the video might have caused.

“I wish to assure everyone that I do not support violence, intimidation or any act capable of endangering human life. My commitment has always been to peace, justice, reconciliation, and the welfare of my people,” he said.

Eze Mba appealed to Governor Otti, the Chairman of Bende LGA, Bassey Uwabunkeonye, and the people of Abia State to accept his clarification “in the spirit to which it is made.”

“I send my sincere apology to everyone who felt hurt,” he concluded.
