The Abia State Government has approved the prohibition of commercial motorcycle operations, popularly known as “Okada,” within the metropolitan areas of Umuahia, Aba and Ohafia.

The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, announced the decision on Saturday, stating that the ban will take effect from Monday, June 22, 2026.

According to the state government, the measure is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security, improve public safety, manage traffic more effectively and create a more organised transportation system across the affected urban areas.

Following the directive, all commercial motorcycle operators operating within the designated metropolitan areas of Umuahia, Aba and Ohafia have been ordered to stop their activities on or before the effective date of the ban.

The government also directed security agencies and relevant enforcement authorities to ensure full compliance with the order.

It warned that any person or operator found violating the directive would be arrested, while the motorcycle involved would be confiscated in accordance with the law.

“The government calls on residents, transport operators, community leaders and members of the public to cooperate fully with the authorities in implementing this directive, which is aimed at promoting collective safety and the overall development of the state,” the statement said.

The state government added that the decision forms part of broader efforts to enhance security and improve urban management across Abia.
