Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has stated that the state is no longer fully dependent on the national grid for its electricity supply, as his administration intensifies efforts to explore alternative energy sources to support industrial development.
The governor made the remark while receiving the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), Jennifer Adighije, during a visit to the state on Thursday.
Otti explained that stable electricity remains essential for economic growth in key commercial hubs such as Umuahia and Aba, adding that the state government is open to partnerships with organisations capable of improving power generation and distribution.
He noted that what matters most to the state is the availability of reliable and consistent electricity, whether from the national grid or alternative power solutions that can drive industrialisation.
In her response, Adighije disclosed that the 450-megawatt section of the Alaoji Power Plant has been restored after years of inactivity.
She said the facility is expected to contribute about 375 megawatts of electricity to the national grid once fully operational.
The NDPHC chief assured the Abia State Government of improved electricity supply and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting the state’s industrialisation agenda through enhanced power generation and distribution efforts.
