President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, on Tuesday joined the Abia State Government, the family of Nigeria’s first Military Head of State, Major-General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, and other distinguished Nigerians to mark the 60th memorial anniversary of the late military leader, with renewed appeals for patriotism, national unity, and selfless service.

The memorial, held on July 29, 2026, at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, drew an impressive gathering of political leaders, military officers, traditional rulers, clergy, and members of the Aguiyi-Ironsi family. President Tinubu was represented by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd.).

Governor Alex Otti, OFR, attended the event alongside his Deputy, His Excellency Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, FNSE, reaffirming the Abia State Government’s commitment to preserving the legacy of Major-General Aguiyi-Ironsi while promoting national unity, patriotism, and selfless service. Their participation reflected the administration’s dedication to preserving Nigeria’s history and advancing inclusive governance.

In his address, President Tinubu described the late Aguiyi-Ironsi as a remarkable patriot who devoted his life to the service, unity, and stability of Nigeria during one of the country's most difficult periods.

“Nigeria remains grateful for the invaluable sacrifices made by your distinguished son, husband, and father in the service of our fatherland.

“General Aguiyi-Ironsi was an outstanding professional soldier whose military career was defined by discipline, courage, loyalty, and unwavering commitment to duty.

“His assumption of leadership came at a time when Nigeria faced immense political uncertainty and national anxiety. Although his tenure was brief, he demonstrated a firm commitment to preserving national unity, restoring stability, and maintaining the integrity of the Nigerian State.

“As we reflect on his legacy today, we are reminded that nation-building is a continuous responsibility that transcends generations. The values of patriotism, discipline, selfless service, integrity, and national unity, which General Aguiyi-Ironsi exemplified, remain as relevant today as they were 60 years ago,” the President stated.

Speaking on behalf of the President, General Musa praised Governor Otti for what he described as visionary leadership and remarkable developmental achievements in Abia State, saying the administration has become a model of purposeful governance.

“Your Excellency, our hardworking Governor, I want to say a very big thank you for all the good works you have been doing.

“You have set a standard of governance, and it is a challenge for others to emulate. We have seen how development can be delivered seamlessly, without noise, while lives continue to improve. We appreciate you, sir. I am looking forward to returning to celebrate your second-term inauguration,” he said.

In his remarks, Governor Otti described Major-General Aguiyi-Ironsi as a courageous and selfless leader whose supreme sacrifice should continue to inspire Nigerians to place national interest above personal and sectional considerations.

“We came here to celebrate a man who gave his life for the rest of us. Personally, I believe we are better off as one country, connected and working together, than divided,” the Governor said.

Governor Otti reiterated that his administration remains committed to merit, inclusiveness, and excellence, stressing that appointments into key positions in Abia State are based on competence, integrity, and capacity rather than ethnicity or state of origin. He cited the appointment of an indigene of Edo State as the Head of Service of Abia State as evidence of the government's commitment to merit-based leadership.

The Governor also paid tribute to former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, whom he described as a father and mentor. He equally acknowledged the contributions of former First Lady Dame Patience Goodluck Jonathan toward preserving Nigeria’s history and announced that Abia State would join in celebrating Chief Obasanjo’s 90th birthday on March 5, 2027.

In separate goodwill messages, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Chief of Army Staff General Azubuike Onyeabo Ihejirika (Rtd.), and former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan described the memorial as a fitting tribute to a distinguished patriot who paid the ultimate price in service to Nigeria. They commended Governor Otti for supporting initiatives that foster peace, national unity, and historical remembrance, while encouraging Nigerians to uphold the values of patriotism, sacrifice, and selfless service.

Presenting the citation of the late military leader, Mrs. Louisa Aguiyi-Ironsi described her father as a committed nationalist whose leadership was built on discipline, patriotism, meritocracy, and the professionalisation of the Armed Forces.

She explained that the memorial was not organised to revive past divisions or glorify conflict but to honour sacrifice and inspire present and future generations of leaders.

“This gathering is not intended for the mere performance of ceremonial rites. Today, we do not assemble to reopen old debates nor to magnify historical divisions.

“This commemoration therefore serves a dual purpose. First, it stands as a solemn tribute to his personal sacrifice and steadfast commitment to a united Nigeria.

“Second, it is a clarion call to present and future leaders to draw inspiration from that commitment. The Nigerian aspiration must be anchored on justice, accountability, discipline, and the collective good,” she stated.

Delivering the vote of thanks, the first son of the late Head of State and former Minister of Defence, Ambassador Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi, expressed appreciation to President Tinubu, Governor Otti, and all the dignitaries who attended the memorial in honour of his father. He also commended Governor Otti’s performance in office and expressed confidence that the Governor deserves a second term.

As part of the commemorative activities, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Umuahia, Most Rev. Michael Kalu Ukpong, led members of the clergy in prayers and consecrated the tomb of Major-General Aguiyi-Ironsi at the Aguiyi-Ironsi Conference Centre, Umuahia.

The ceremony concluded with the laying of wreaths by the President’s representative, Governor Alex Otti, the representative of Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo and the State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, Dame Patience Jonathan, members of the Aguiyi-Ironsi family, and other distinguished guests in honour of a leader remembered for making the ultimate sacrifice in the service of Nigeria.
