The Abia State Police Command has launched an investigation into an alleged attack on police officers and facilities in Akwete, even as it dismissed claims circulating in a viral social media video accusing officers of misconduct and misuse of firearms.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, speaking on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, said the allegations contained in the video were misleading and did not accurately represent what transpired.
“The Command categorically states that the claims are false and do not reflect the true circumstances surrounding the incident,” the statement noted.
According to the police, officers attached to the Akwete Divisional Headquarters acted on intelligence reports to arrest one Chidi Stanley of Obiohuru, Akwete, in connection with a domestic incident that allegedly resulted in the death of his eight-year-old daughter.
The Command explained that during an altercation with his sister, the suspect allegedly threw a stone which struck the child, identified as Miss Chiamaka Stanley. She was later confirmed dead at a hospital.
Police further alleged that the family failed to report the child’s death and instead began burial preparations without notifying law enforcement authorities.
Following intelligence reports, officers reportedly visited the area, documented the scene, including a dug grave, and requested access to the deceased’s body. However, the police said they were resisted by some family members and youths within the community.
“The family, supported by some youths of the community, resisted police intervention and denied access, creating a tense and potentially violent situation,” the statement added.
The matter was later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation after initial discussions with community leaders.
The police said tensions escalated after the transfer of the case, with some youths allegedly attempting to attack officers and the divisional police station despite repeated appeals for calm.
According to the Command, officers were forced to defend themselves and secure police facilities in order to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
The Commissioner of Police warned against attacks on officers carrying out lawful duties and stated that efforts were ongoing to identify and arrest those involved in the attempted assault.
He also appealed to residents to cooperate with security agencies in fighting crime instead of obstructing investigations or resorting to violence. The Command further urged the public to ignore misinformation and unverified reports being circulated on social media.
