The Abia State Police Command has dismissed allegations circulating in a viral social media video accusing officers attached to the Akwete Divisional Police Headquarters of misconduct and misuse of firearms, describing the claims as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Command explained that the incident originated from a domestic dispute that tragically resulted in the death of an eight-year-old girl in Akwete community, Ukwa East Local Government Area.
The statement, signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, said officers from the Akwete Divisional Headquarters arrested one Mr. Chidi Stanley of Obiohuru, Akwete, on May 11, 2026, following intelligence reports linked to the case.
According to the Command, the suspect allegedly threw a stone during an altercation with his sister, Mrs. Chinyere Stanley, but mistakenly struck his daughter, Miss Chiamaka Stanley, who sustained fatal injuries. She was later confirmed dead at a hospital.
Police further alleged that the family failed to report the incident and attempted to proceed with a secret burial without notifying authorities.
Acting on credible intelligence, officers visited the scene, documented the situation—including a dug grave—and requested access to the body, while inviting family members for questioning at the station.
However, the Command said some relatives and youths in the community resisted police intervention and denied officers access to the body, creating tension in the area.
The police added that the matter was later de-escalated after engagement with community leaders, and the family eventually complied, allowing the case and the suspect to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
The statement also noted that some aggrieved youths later mobilised to attempt an attack on the police division despite explanations that the case had already been transferred.
According to the Command, officers were forced to take defensive measures to protect lives and police property, while community leaders reportedly condemned the actions of the youths.
The Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to professional and lawful policing in line with directives from the Inspector-General of Police.
He urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information to aid crime prevention, while warning against shielding suspects or attacking officers on duty.
The Command also called on the public to disregard misinformation and avoid spreading unverified reports that could heighten tension in the state
