The Executive Chairman of Ukwa West Local Government Area in Abia State, Dike Briggs Nwankwo, has announced new restrictions on the operations of commercial motorcycle riders, limiting their activities to between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily from July 2, 2026.

The directive follows growing security concerns in the area, including the recent killing of a fresh graduate, Mr. Chinye Uche, whose motorcycle was reportedly stolen by his unidentified attackers. The decision is also intended to address other criminal activities recorded within the council.

A statement issued by the Chairman's Chief Press Secretary, Chidi Onyedikachi, said the restriction was introduced after extensive consultations with the Ukwa West Commercial Motorcycle Operators' Union, security agencies and relevant state authorities.

As part of the new security measures, the local government, in partnership with the Commercial Motorcycle Operators' Union, will begin the identification and registration of all commercial motorcycle operators in the area to strengthen security monitoring and accountability.

The council also directed all commercial motorcycle operators to relocate their loading and parking points to the designated area in front of the market, in line with an agreement reached with the union leadership. The move is aimed at reducing congestion at major junctions and improving the free flow of traffic.

The statement warned that anyone found violating the approved operating hours or any of the new directives would face enforcement actions, including the impoundment of motorcycles, arrest and possible prosecution.

According to the council, the measures were introduced to enhance security and safeguard the lives and property of residents across Ukwa West Local Government Area.
