Labour Party Screens 24 Aspirants for Abia Assembly Seats Ahead of 2027 Polls

The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party has concluded the screening of aspirants seeking to contest for seats in the Abia State House of Assembly ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The exercise, conducted by the party’s State Working Committee (SWC), was held in line with the Labour Party’s approved timetable, which designated May 20, 2026, for the screening of House of Assembly aspirants across the state.
According to the party, the screening process was carried out in strict compliance with the Electoral Act, the Labour Party constitution, and established guidelines governing its pre-election activities.
A total of 24 aspirants took part in the exercise, presenting their credentials and other necessary documents before the screening committee as part of efforts to ensure a transparent, fair, and credible process.
The event attracted several top party officials and elected representatives, including the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Emmanuel Emeruwa, and the Deputy Speaker, Austin Okezie Ugolee, alongside other lawmakers and party leaders.
The Labour Party described the exercise as peaceful, orderly, and comprehensive, adding that the process demonstrated the party’s commitment to internal democracy and the emergence of credible candidates capable of representing the people effectively.
The party also reaffirmed its resolve to strictly follow its approved timetable and guidelines throughout the electoral process, assuring members and supporters that all activities leading to the primaries and the 2027 elections would be conducted transparently and in accordance with the law.
Party leaders stressed that adherence to the timetable remains vital in promoting discipline, orderliness, and confidence among members and aspirants across the state.
The party further disclosed that the official outcome of the screening exercise would be announced after the completion of all internal procedures and reviews.
