Police Arrest Abia Man Over Viral Video Showing Assault of Woman During Soup Dispute

The Abia State Police Command has arrested a suspect seen in a viral video assaulting a woman during a dispute over a pot of soup, with the suspect set to face charges of assault and attempted murder.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, disclosed this on Sunday on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa.

She identified the suspect as Agwu Ukpo, a 37-year-old man from Akanu Ohafia in Abia State.

According to the police, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit, Abia Command, arrested Ukpo following intelligence gathered after the video circulated online.

The statement read, “Leveraging on actionable intelligence, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit, Abia Command, have apprehended the above-mentioned suspect, who was captured in a viral video assaulting one Amarachi Chiyere over a dispute relating to a pot of soup.”

The command said the matter is currently being investigated by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), adding that the suspect would be arraigned in court after the conclusion of investigations.

The police condemned the alleged assault, describing the act as barbaric and inhumane, while stressing that violence against others would not be tolerated under any circumstance.

The command urged members of the public to avoid all forms of violence and seek lawful means of resolving disputes.

It assured residents that efforts would continue to ensure justice is served and that anyone found responsible for criminal acts would face the full consequences of the law.
