The Abia State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with conspiracy, attempted child theft, and possession of suspected illicit drugs in Umuahia.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said the arrest was made on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa. The suspects were identified as Nzubechi Chinagorom, 24, and Chinonso Chibundu, 25, both from Olokoro in Umuahia South Local Government Area.
According to the statement, the incident occurred on May 25, 2026, when the suspects allegedly visited the residence of a 32-year-old woman, Miss Amarachi Chinyereugo, in the same area.
It explained that Nzubechi Chinagorom attempted to forcibly take away the woman’s two-week-old baby girl, leading to a struggle with the mother. During the attack, the suspect allegedly assaulted her and stabbed her with a kitchen knife, causing the baby to fall and hit her head on the ground.
Following the distress call, the suspects fled the scene but were later apprehended at a nearby bus stop, where they were reportedly found taking substances suspected to be hard drugs.
The police said both the mother and child were immediately taken to the hospital, where they received treatment and have since recovered.
The statement added that the suspects were arrested, relevant exhibits recovered, and investigations concluded at the State Criminal Investigation Department.
The Command further disclosed that the suspects will be charged to court on June 2.
Reiterating its commitment to protecting lives and property, the Abia State Police Command urged residents to continue working with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
