Six Killed, Seven Injured as Speeding Car Ploughs Into Traders, Motorcyclists in Abia

At least six people were killed on Tuesday after a speeding black Toyota vehicle crashed into a group of traders and commercial motorcyclists at Umuikaa Junction in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State, along the Enugu–Aba–Port Harcourt Expressway.

Seven other victims sustained varying degrees of injuries in the crash, while six motorcycles were damaged.

According to reports, the vehicle was travelling from the Umuahia axis when the driver reportedly lost control, veering into traders gathered at the junction. Many of those affected were said to be female traders.

The out-of-control vehicle also struck several commercial motorcycle operators who had assembled at the location for their daily business before eventually crashing into a nearby building.

The bodies of the six victims were evacuated to a mortuary after they were confirmed dead, while those who survived the incident were taken to hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Although the exact cause of the accident has yet to be determined by the relevant authorities, some residents of Umuikaa attributed the crash to either excessive speeding or possible brake failure.

Confirming the incident on Wednesday, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Abia State Command, C.C. Ngozi Ezeoma, said the accident occurred at Umuikaa Junction.

"Yes, it happened at Umuikaa Junction," the Sector Commander stated.
