Trailer Crashes Into FMC Umuahia Fence After Losing Control on Expressway

A heavy-duty trailer transporting iron rods crashed into the perimeter fence of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, in the early hours of Thursday after reportedly losing control while climbing a hill.

The incident occurred along the Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Expressway, near Finbarrs Road and close to the Abia State High Court, resulting in a major traffic gridlock on the busy route.

According to information gathered by PUNCH Online, the trailer developed a mechanical problem while ascending the hill, causing it to roll backwards uncontrollably before slamming into the hospital's perimeter fence.

The driver, who declined to disclose his identity, said the accident happened at about 2:00 a.m.

He explained that the vehicle lost compression while climbing the hill, making it impossible to maintain control before it rolled back and crashed into the fence.

The accident left the trailer partially blocking the federal highway, leading to severe traffic congestion during the morning rush hour as motorists struggled to navigate the affected section of the road.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no official confirmation of any casualties.

Efforts were, however, ongoing to remove the trailer from the road and restore the free flow of traffic.
