The Abia State Government on Friday honoured elder statesman, distinguished educationist and former Minister of Education and Health, Professor Ihechukwu Chiedozie Madubuike, as he celebrated his 83rd birthday, with a ceremony that featured heartfelt tributes and the launch of three books documenting his lifelong contributions to education, public service and national development.

The event, held at the Michael Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia, drew an impressive gathering of political leaders, academics, traditional rulers, business executives and other eminent Nigerians who came together to celebrate one of the nation's most respected intellectuals.

Leading the tributes, Governor Alex Otti congratulated Professor Madubuike on reaching the milestone age of 83, describing him as an exceptional scholar, accomplished administrator, patriot and one of Abia State’s most treasured intellectuals.

Governor Otti said his administration is committed to recognising deserving Abians while they are still alive, stressing that any society that neglects to celebrate its heroes risks losing touch with its identity and history.

He noted that Professor Madubuike earned the honour through decades of academic excellence, visionary leadership, integrity and dedicated service to humanity.

The Governor also reaffirmed that his administration places greater value on merit, excellence and service than political or religious affiliation, maintaining that every Abia son or daughter who has distinguished themselves deserves recognition.

“We don’t care about political parties, where you worship or where you originally came from. What matters is your contribution to our State. Once you are our son or daughter and have served humanity with distinction, we will celebrate you because Abia comes first,” Governor Otti said.

Speaking on his administration’s achievements, the Governor highlighted ongoing reforms in the education and healthcare sectors. He revealed that Abia State University has undergone significant rehabilitation of its hostels and academic facilities, while Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic has regained previously lost accreditations and introduced programmes in Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and 3D Printing.

Governor Otti also reiterated his commitment to the proposed Abia Seaport project, disclosing that a Chinese firm is currently carrying out feasibility studies as part of efforts to secure funding.

“We are serious about building the Abia Seaport, and it will happen in our generation. We are equally committed to delivering world-class healthcare and education because that is the future we owe our people,” he assured.

Chairman of the occasion and former Governor of Anambra State, Senator Chris Ngige, described Professor Madubuike as an academic icon and patriotic Nigerian whose contributions to education and healthcare have left a lasting impact. He also commended Governor Otti for honouring distinguished Abians and praised the quality of infrastructure projects being executed across the state, urging him to sustain the momentum while encouraging residents to continue supporting his administration.

Former Minister of Labour and Employment, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, equally applauded Governor Otti for recognising Professor Madubuike’s enduring legacy, describing the celebrant as a rare individual whose contributions helped shape Nigeria’s educational system.

Former Senator MAO Ohuabunwa also praised the Governor for institutionalising the culture of celebrating accomplished citizens. He recalled Professor Madubuike’s distinguished career in public service, noting that he served as Commissioner for Finance under the late Chief Sam Mbakwe before becoming Minister of Education, where he championed major educational reforms, including the establishment of state-owned, private and open universities in Nigeria.

Also speaking, former Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Sir Simeon Okeke, commended Governor Otti’s developmental strides, describing the transformation taking place across Abia State as unprecedented.

In his response, Professor Madubuike expressed gratitude to Governor Otti for the honour and praised the administration’s reforms in education and governance. He said the Governor had restored hope to the people through purposeful leadership, adding that Abia had witnessed remarkable progress within a relatively short period.

He encouraged the state government to further strengthen the education sector by establishing a state think tank and considering the creation of a specialised technology institution focused on innovation, research and emerging technologies.

According to him, education remains the strongest driver of sustainable development and the foundation upon which any prosperous society is built.

One of the major highlights of the event was the unveiling of three books. They include A Crumbling State: Issues in Nation Building and Development and Aka Ekpuchi Onwa: The Igbo Unbowed, both written by Professor Madubuike, as well as Triple Heritage: Essays in Honour of Ihechukwu Madubuike, Scholar, Administrator and Public Intellectual, edited by Professors Chima J. Korieh and Victor Ukaogu.

The books, reviewed by Professor Chima Korieh and Dr. Jasper Uche, examine issues of national development, governance, Igbo history, and the life and enduring legacy of Professor Madubuike.

The celebration ended with the cutting of the birthday cake and the official launch of the three books, as guests applauded the remarkable achievements of the celebrated scholar.

Among those in attendance were the Deputy Governor of Abia State, the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, members of the State Executive Council, former Minister Dr. Sampson Uchechukwu Ogah, Chris Uche, SAN, Chief David Onuoha Ogba (Bourdex), prominent academics, business leaders, clergy and other distinguished personalities.
