Abia Delegation Attends 56th ICAN Annual Accountants’ Conference in Abuja

A delegation of more than 150 officials from Abia State, led by the State Accountant-General, Dr. Njum Onyemenam, is participating in the 56th Annual Accountants’ Conference (AAC) of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), holding at the International Conference Centre in Abuja.

The conference, themed “Beyond the Numbers: Strengthening the Economy, Securing the Nation,” brings together accounting professionals, policymakers, business leaders, public sector administrators and other stakeholders to discuss economic challenges, professional standards and strategies for sustainable national development.

This year's theme highlights the role of accounting in economic policymaking, fiscal discipline and effective public financial management. It also emphasises the importance of transparency, accountability and responsible resource utilisation in strengthening national security and economic stability.

Abia State's participation reflects its engagement with professional institutions and knowledge-sharing platforms aimed at improving financial administration, strengthening institutional capacity and promoting best practices in governance.

The conference provides participants with opportunities to examine developments in accounting, taxation, financial technology, public sector auditing, risk management and corporate governance. Through technical presentations, panel discussions and professional networking, delegates are expected to gain insights that could support more efficient financial systems and improved public service delivery.

Sound financial management remains essential to credible financial reporting, prudent budgeting, effective revenue administration and proper monitoring of public expenditure. These practices can help strengthen public confidence, encourage investment and ensure that available resources are directed towards development priorities.

The conference theme also draws attention to the relationship between economic stability and national security, highlighting how transparent institutions, accountable leadership and a resilient economy can contribute to public trust, peace and national cohesion.

For Abia State, the experience and professional knowledge gained from the conference could help promote innovation in financial management, strengthen accountability mechanisms and improve institutional performance across the public and private sectors.

The participation of the state delegation further underscores the importance of continuous professional development and collaboration in equipping accounting practitioners to respond to Nigeria's evolving economic and governance challenges.

The 56th ICAN Annual Accountants' Conference serves as a platform for exchanging ideas and exploring practical approaches to strengthening financial accountability, supporting economic growth and advancing sustainable national development.
