Abia to Host Diaspora Global Homecoming in December, Seeks Investment and Knowledge Transfer

Abia State is preparing to host its Diaspora Global Homecoming from December 18 to 21, 2026, with indigenes living abroad expected to explore investment opportunities, share professional expertise and identify ways to contribute to the state's development.

The Chief Executive Officer and Executive Secretary of the Abia State Diaspora Commission, Rev. Dr. Ambassador Annie Onu, announced the programme during a press conference, explaining that it would provide a platform for strengthening relationships between the state and its diaspora community.

Onu said the event would bring together Abians from different parts of the world to reconnect with their homeland, assess ongoing development initiatives and explore opportunities to support economic growth through investments, entrepreneurship and knowledge exchange.

“The Abia Diaspora Global Homecoming is an opportunity for Abians living abroad to return home, witness the progress being made in the state and contribute their knowledge, skills and resources to its development,” she said.

She added that many Abians abroad were interested in seeing developments in the state firsthand and identifying practical ways to support its growth.

“Our brothers and sisters in the diaspora have heard about the achievements of the present administration, and they are coming in their numbers to see the progress for themselves and identify ways to support the state,” Onu stated.

According to her, the programme would also connect diaspora participants with local entrepreneurs, organic farmers and other stakeholders to encourage business discussions, partnerships and investment in various sectors.

Activities will begin on December 18 with a solidarity walk, followed by engagements with local content providers and organic farmers. These sessions are expected to promote the exchange of business ideas and showcase locally produced goods.

Onu explained that the interactions would also enable participants to identify products with export potential and explore partnerships that could help local businesses reach wider markets.

She noted that many Abians living abroad had acquired valuable professional skills, technical knowledge and international experience that could contribute to development efforts at home.

“We have professionals and highly skilled Abians doing great things in different parts of the world. They are eager to bring their knowledge and expertise back home and contribute to the development of Abia in various capacities,” she said.

The commission's chief executive disclosed that the grand finale, scheduled for December 21, would feature an interactive session with Governor Alex Otti. The meeting is expected to give diaspora participants an opportunity to discuss potential areas of collaboration and present ideas for supporting the state's development agenda.

She also highlighted the importance of improved air connectivity, noting that stronger transport links could create opportunities for business, investment and closer economic relationships between Abia and the international community.

Onu called on residents to prepare for the arrival of their relatives and other Abians returning from abroad, urging them to welcome the visitors and engage them in discussions that could promote community development.

She stressed that the success of the homecoming would depend on cooperation among the state government, residents and the diaspora community.

The commission, she added, was also committed to promoting the welfare of Abians living abroad, including supporting their educational needs and providing guidance where necessary.

Onu further disclosed that efforts were underway to establish commission chapters in locations with significant Abian populations abroad. The proposed chapters are expected to strengthen communication, improve engagement and maintain closer connections between diaspora communities and their home state.

Reiterating her appeal to residents, she said the homecoming should serve as an opportunity to exchange ideas, build partnerships and encourage collective efforts towards Abia State's development.
