Senior Political Assistant to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, Demola Olarenwaju, has raised concerns over the treatment of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai while in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

Olarenwaju warned on Saturday that denying El-Rufai access to medical attention while in detention could pose serious risks for the administration of President Bola Tinubu, adding that the government would be held accountable if anything happens to him.

His comments followed reports that the ICPC allegedly refused El-Rufai access to medical care while he remains in custody.

An aide to the former governor, Muyiwa Adekeye, claimed that El-Rufai is suffering from swollen, red, and itchy eyes and urgently requires medical attention that has allegedly been denied.

El-Rufai was arrested earlier in the year at the Abuja International Airport and subsequently charged in court with abuse of office and money laundering linked to his tenure as governor.

Reacting via a post on X, Olarenwaju described the situation as dangerous, insisting that the government could not afford to ignore the former governor’s medical condition.

“Denying El-Rufai access to medical care is a risk the Bola Tinubu regime cannot afford,” he wrote.

He further warned that any harm suffered by El-Rufai would be blamed on the authorities handling his detention, arguing that the situation reflects a troubling level of political tension.

“And we must say it clearly yet again that if anything happens to the man, it will be on the government that has detained him illegally. Politics taken to this extent is extremely dangerous,” he added.
