GELD Construction Assures World-Class Delivery of Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Road Project

GELD Construction Company has reiterated its commitment to delivering a top-quality road infrastructure project as work continues on the Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Road Expansion and Reconstruction Project in Abia State.

The Project Manager of the company, Engineer Sourabh Mhala, stated that the firm remains focused on constructing a road that meets global standards in quality, safety, and durability.

According to Mhala, GELD Construction has maintained a strong operational presence in Abia State since 2023, executing several key infrastructure projects. He noted that among the company’s completed projects are a 30-kilometre road network and the Omenuko Bridge, both commissioned by Governor Alex Otti in February 2026.

Speaking on the ongoing Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Road project, Mhala disclosed that the 31-kilometre expansion and reconstruction work, which was inaugurated by Governor Otti in November 2025, is advancing steadily and remains on schedule.

He explained that construction activities are currently underway across different sections of the corridor, with the company maintaining a consistent pace to meet project timelines.

According to him, the project involves widening the existing road from about 7.3 metres to as much as 30 metres in some areas. It also includes the construction of extensive drainage systems on both sides of the road to enhance longevity and ensure effective flood control.

Mhala highlighted the technical specifications of the project, noting that the road is being built with a 20-centimetre sub-base course, a 20-centimetre stone base course, a 6-centimetre binder course, and a 4-centimetre wearing course.

He said these engineering standards are intended to provide greater load-bearing strength, a smoother driving surface, improved comfort for road users, and long-term resistance to heavy traffic and harsh weather conditions.

The project manager assured residents and motorists that the company remains dedicated to delivering a modern road infrastructure that will serve the state for many years.

“Our goal is to provide a high-quality, superior, first-class, and state-of-the-art road that will stand the test of time. The road is being constructed to ensure excellent surface smoothness, strong structural integrity, efficient drainage, and overall resilience against adverse weather conditions. We are on schedule and confident of completing the project within the stipulated contract period,” Mhala said.

When completed, the Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Road project is expected to enhance transportation, stimulate economic activities, improve interstate connectivity, and support the broader infrastructure development agenda of the administration of Governor Alex Otti.
