The factional National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Agbo Major, has warned that ongoing disputes over the party’s leadership and structure could have implications for democratic processes as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, Major reaffirmed the party’s commitment to constitutional principles and the rule of law, stressing that issues relating to membership, discipline and leadership must be handled through established procedures.

He maintained that the NNPP operates within the framework of its constitution and the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, noting that decisions affecting the party should not be driven by personal interests.

Major expressed concern over what he described as attempts to create uncertainty about the party’s legitimate leadership despite legal developments and judicial pronouncements concerning its internal affairs.

According to him, certain individuals and groups continue to seek recognition while their status within the party remains disputed.

He stressed the importance of neutrality among institutions responsible for safeguarding democracy, arguing that democratic governance can only thrive when public institutions uphold the rule of law without bias or external influence.

The NNPP chieftain further insisted that some individuals claiming to represent the party no longer speak on behalf of its recognised leadership and called for an objective assessment of issues affecting the party’s unity and stability.

Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Major urged political actors and groups considering alliances or partnerships to address internal disagreements transparently and responsibly.

He warned that unresolved conflicts within political organisations could undermine future collaborations and weaken democratic processes.

According to him, decisions made in the lead-up to the elections will have lasting consequences for Nigeria’s political landscape and democratic development.

Major also called on the judiciary to continue playing its constitutional role in protecting democratic values and maintaining public confidence in the justice system.

He said concerns over alleged disregard for judicial decisions should be addressed through lawful channels to preserve the integrity of democratic institutions.

The factional chairman emphasized that Nigeria’s democracy is larger than any individual, political party or institution and that its survival depends on respect for constitutional principles, accountability and adherence to the rule of law.

He reaffirmed the NNPP’s commitment to strengthening its political platform and pursuing lawful measures to protect the party’s identity, integrity and future.

Major added that the party remains focused on promoting national unity, economic growth, social justice and good governance across the country.

He also appealed to NNPP supporters nationwide to remain peaceful, vigilant and committed to democratic ideals, expressing confidence that truth, justice and the rule of law would ultimately prevail.
