Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has officially flagged off activities marking his third year in office with a media chat held on Friday, May 21, 2026, at the Michael Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia.
During the session, the governor presented the achievements of his administration over the past three years, stating that his government has made notable progress across key sectors while working to restore and maintain the people’s confidence in governance.
Governor Otti said his administration had successfully restored security in all local government areas previously affected by insecurity, pointing to Umunneochi Local Government Area as one of the major success stories.
According to him, traditional rulers from the area recently visited him to appreciate the government’s efforts in bringing back peace and stability.
The governor also stated that his administration has maintained regular payment of salaries and pensions, ensuring that civil servants and retirees receive their payments on the 28th day of every month.
Speaking on government assets, Otti disclosed that several landed properties allegedly acquired illegally by individuals and organisations had been recovered and secured by the state government through fencing.
He noted that some occupants affected by the recovery exercise had taken legal action, adding that the government was addressing the matters through due legal processes.
On the state’s finances, the governor revealed that Abia’s debt profile had been reduced from N91 billion in 2023 to less than N50 billion in 2025.
He further stated that Abia State, which was previously ranked 17th on development indices, is now ranked fourth in the country.
Highlighting achievements in infrastructure, Otti said his administration completed 414 road projects covering 864.12 kilometres within three years. He added that another 82 road projects spanning 212 kilometres are currently ongoing across the state.
According to him, all roads constructed by his administration are equipped with streetlights and proper drainage systems as part of the government’s zero-pothole policy.
He said the road projects have helped to reduce transportation costs, improve commercial activities, and create jobs for residents.
In the health sector, the governor disclosed that the government recruited 771 healthcare workers and renovated 277 healthcare centres across the state.
He added that 120 health centres are now fully functional with adequate staffing and equipment, while renovation works in several general hospitals have either been completed or are still ongoing.
Speaking on education, Governor Otti said the introduction of free basic education by his administration has led to a sharp increase in school enrollment across the state.
He revealed that more than 300,000 pupils have so far been enrolled, while about 5,394 teachers have been recruited to strengthen the education system.
The governor also noted that several tertiary institutions in the state that previously lost accreditation for some courses have now regained their accredited status.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the welfare of residents, Otti said his government would continue working to strengthen public trust and improve the living conditions of the people.
He also congratulated political parties in the state that have concluded their primaries and wished them success ahead of the 2027 general elections.
