Cristiano Ronaldo added another remarkable achievement to his legendary career on Tuesday after becoming the first footballer to score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments during Portugal’s emphatic 5-0 win over Uzbekistan in their Group K encounter.

The historic feat came just a day after Argentina captain Lionel Messi became the tournament’s all-time leading goalscorer, with Ronaldo delivering a memorable response to help keep Portugal’s World Cup campaign on course.

The Portuguese captain wasted little time making an impact, opening the scoring in the sixth minute when he connected with a precise cross from João Cancelo and guided the ball past the goalkeeper from close range.

The strike was Ronaldo’s ninth World Cup goal since his debut appearance at the tournament in 2006 and his 144th goal for Portugal at international level.

At 41, Ronaldo also became the second-oldest player ever to score at a World Cup, behind Roger Milla, who scored at the age of 42 during the 1994 tournament in the United States.

Although he remains behind Messi’s World Cup scoring record of 18 goals, Ronaldo moved closer to the mark when he grabbed his second goal of the match in the 39th minute.

His brace came shortly after Nuno Mendes had doubled Portugal’s lead through a well-executed free-kick routine, as the side managed by Roberto Martinez took complete control before halftime.

Portugal maintained their dominance after the interval. An own goal further extended their advantage before substitute Rafael Leão added a fifth goal to complete the rout.

The victory secured Portugal’s first win of the tournament following their opening draw against DR Congo.

For Ronaldo, the FIFA World Cup remains the one major trophy yet to be added to an already glittering collection of honours. Having captained Portugal to victory at the UEFA Euro 2016, he will be hoping this edition finally brings him football’s most coveted prize.

Ronaldo’s World Cup story began in 2006 when he scored once in six matches as Portugal reached the semi-finals before eventually finishing fourth.

He had already made World Cup history at the 2022 tournament in Qatar by becoming the first player to score in five different editions of the competition after finding the net against Ghana in Portugal’s opening match.

Ahead of Tuesday’s clash, however, questions had surfaced about his role in the national team. Critics pointed to a sequence of 10 major tournament matches without a goal and suggested his influence in attacking build-up play had diminished.

Yet the veteran forward once again answered his critics on football’s biggest stage.

When Portugal needed a spark, Ronaldo delivered a record-breaking performance, proving that even at 41 years old, he remains capable of producing decisive moments at the highest level of the game.
