Lamine Yamal made an immediate impact on his return to the Spain starting lineup, scoring as the European champions thrashed Saudi Arabia 4-0 on Sunday to revive their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

The 18-year-old forward opened the scoring in the 10th minute of the Group H encounter in Atlanta, setting Spain on course for a dominant victory over a Saudi Arabian side that struggled to cope with La Roja’s attacking intensity.

Spain entered the match eager to respond after a disappointing goalless draw against Cape Verde in their tournament opener, a result that raised questions about their usually potent attack.

With Yamal making his first start in two months following recovery from a hamstring injury, Spain looked rejuvenated from the outset.

The young star found the breakthrough when he arrived unmarked at the far post to convert a low cross from Mikel Oyarzabal.

Oyarzabal then took centre stage, scoring twice within three minutes to extend Spain’s lead to 3-0 after just 24 minutes and effectively put the contest beyond Saudi Arabia’s reach.

Spain added a fourth goal shortly after the restart. In the 49th minute, Marc Cucurella’s effort was saved by goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais, but the rebound deflected off defender Hassan Al-Tambakti and into the net for an unfortunate own goal.

The convincing victory moved Spain to the top of Group H with four points from two matches, placing them in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stage.

Cape Verde Eye Another Surprise

Later on Sunday, Cape Verde were set to face Uruguay in Miami, with head coach Pedro Leitao Brito, popularly known as “Bubista,” insisting his side would approach the match with confidence.

“We didn’t come just to participate,” Bubista said. “We want to play every match and prove that we can compete with the best teams in the world.”

He added that his players would take to the field with courage and determination, refusing to be intimidated by more established opponents.

Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, whose outstanding display helped secure a draw against Spain, received a personal boost ahead of the game. His mother, Ana Candida Evora, arrived in Miami after finally obtaining a United States visa, allowing her to watch him play at the World Cup.

Belgium and Iran Prepare for Crucial Clash

Elsewhere, Belgium were expected to be without winger Jeremy Doku once again due to respiratory illness as they prepared to face Iran.

Belgium were held to a draw by Egypt in their opening match, and Doku’s absence remains a concern for the team.

Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei revealed that travel restrictions affecting his squad were expected to be eased before their final group match against Egypt in Seattle on June 26. He, however, suggested that the difficulties encountered had negatively affected the team's preparations and performances.

Despite those challenges, Iran remain in contention after earning a 2-2 draw against New Zealand in their opening fixture.

Egypt and New Zealand were also scheduled to meet later on Sunday in Vancouver.

Germany Secure Knockout Spot

On Saturday, Germany became one of the first teams to secure a place in the knockout rounds after edging Ivory Coast 2-1 with a dramatic stoppage-time winner.

The result marked Germany’s first qualification for the World Cup knockout stage since 2014.

Germany’s progress was further confirmed when Curacao, the smallest nation by population ever to reach the World Cup, held Ecuador to a surprising 0-0 draw in Kansas City. The result guaranteed Germany top spot in Group E with a game still to play.

Netherlands and Japan Stay on Track

In Group F, the Netherlands strengthened their qualification hopes with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Sweden.

Japan also continued their impressive campaign, defeating Tunisia 4-0 in Monterrey, Mexico, in what was the 1,000th match in FIFA World Cup history.

The win lifted Japan level on four points with the Netherlands, setting up an intriguing battle for top position in the group.
