Bruno Fernandes produced a brilliant performance, scoring a hat-trick and providing an assist as Manchester United came from behind to defeat Ipswich Town 5-2 and kick-start their Premier League campaign on Sunday.

The Red Devils were looking to bounce back from last weekend's disappointing 2-0 defeat to Hull, but another newly promoted side put them under pressure when Leif Davis gave Ipswich the lead.

Manchester United, however, responded strongly, with Fernandes levelling the score before half-time. A Jacob Greaves own goal then put United ahead before Fernandes converted a penalty and later completed his hat-trick.

Bryan Mbeumo also got on the scoresheet after being set up by the Portuguese midfielder.

Marcus Rashford was handed his first Manchester United start in almost two years as Michael Carrick made four changes to the team that began the season with a poor performance eight days earlier.

The return of Rashford and fellow England international Kobbie Mainoo made a noticeable difference, but United were once again heavily reliant on Fernandes to provide the cutting edge in attack.

However, concerns remain over the team's defensive performance.

Goalkeeper Senne Lammens was forced to make an important one-on-one save against Julio Enciso after the Ipswich player broke through following a Manchester United corner.

Ipswich eventually took the lead in the 29th minute when Abdul Fatawu beat Luke Shaw for pace on the wing and delivered a cross that Davis brilliantly swept high into the net.

The Ipswich left-back had another good opportunity moments later to double his side's advantage, but his effort was comfortably saved by Lammens.

United benefited from another turning point 11 minutes into the second half when the ball struck Harry Maguire's arm before he fired a shot towards goal.

The effort was heading wide and deflected off Greaves into the net. The goal stood because the handball was not judged to have directly resulted in the goal.

Greaves then compounded his misery shortly afterwards when he brought down Cunha as the United forward moved towards goal.

Fernandes stepped up and calmly converted the resulting penalty.

The Portuguese midfielder, who was named last season's Player of the Year by his fellow professionals, had registered a record 21 Premier League assists last season but scored only nine goals.

He is already well on his way to matching that goal tally this season after completing his hat-trick by reacting quickest to Mbeumo's deflected effort.

Fernandes later capped his outstanding display with an assist, playing Mbeumo through with a pass over the top before the forward lifted the ball over Ipswich goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen.

Despite their impressive attacking display, Manchester United's defensive frailties surfaced again in stoppage time.

Lisandro Martinez was caught in possession by Enciso, who set up Chuba Akpom to tap the ball into an empty net for Ipswich's second goal.
