The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has disclosed that its Rescue and Emergency Response Unit saved 353 victims involved in road traffic accidents and other emergency incidents across the state between January and May 2026.

The agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, revealed this while reviewing the activities of the unit in a statement issued on Sunday by LASTMA spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq.

The rescued victims comprised 207 adult males, 137 adult females and nine male children.

Bakare-Oki said the figure reflected the dangers faced by road users, particularly during periods of harsh weather conditions. He urged motorists, commercial transport operators, motorcyclists and other road users to obey traffic rules and remain cautious as rainfall intensifies across Lagos.

According to him, the rainy season often creates additional road hazards, including poor visibility, slippery surfaces, reduced tyre grip, flooded roads and vehicle-related faults, all of which can increase the likelihood of crashes.

“While we take pride in successfully rescuing 353 individuals within the first five months of the year, the incidents also remind us of the urgent need for greater caution and responsibility on our roads, especially during this rainy season,” Bakare-Oki said.

He noted that many accidents could be avoided through responsible driving practices such as obeying speed limits, maintaining safe distances, avoiding dangerous overtaking and ensuring regular vehicle maintenance.

The LASTMA boss advised motorists to inspect essential vehicle components, including brakes, tyres, windscreen wipers, lights, indicators and steering systems, before travelling during heavy rainfall.

He warned drivers against speeding on wet roads, explaining that rain reduces tyre grip and increases stopping distances, which could lead to skidding and collisions.

Bakare-Oki also cautioned motorists against driving through flooded areas without first determining the depth and safety of such routes.

He commended officers of LASTMA’s Rescue and Emergency Response Team for their dedication and quick response, while appreciating the support of emergency agencies, healthcare workers, security personnel and other rescue partners.

“Every life preserved is of immeasurable value. We therefore urge all motorists to make safety their foremost priority during this rainy season,” he said.

He added that strict adherence to traffic regulations and responsible road behaviour remained the most effective ways to prevent avoidable accidents and loss of lives.
