Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland led the way as Real Madrid and Manchester City began their Champions League campaigns with victories on Tuesday.

Real Madrid edged Inter Milan 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu, while Manchester City secured a 2-0 away win over Porto.

At the Bernabéu, Real Madrid appeared to be cruising after Mbappé and Federico Valverde put the hosts two goals ahead, but Carlos Augusto’s second-half strike gave Inter hope of a comeback.

UEFA reported that Mbappé and Valverde helped Madrid establish early control of the contest before Inter’s late response set up a tense finish.

Mbappé opened the scoring after Inter defender Yann Bisseck’s attempted clearance fell into the path of Brahim Díaz, who set up the French forward.

Valverde then doubled Madrid’s lead after Inter goalkeeper Josep Martínez was caught out.

Inter reduced the deficit through Carlos Augusto in the second half and increased the pressure in search of an equaliser.

However, Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois produced several important saves to preserve his side’s advantage as José Mourinho’s team secured three points in their European opener.

The victory was particularly significant for Mourinho, who returned to the Real Madrid dugout this season and began another Champions League campaign with the Spanish giants.

Ahead of the encounter, Mourinho had dismissed suggestions that he was under additional pressure to win the competition, despite failing to lift the trophy during his first spell at the club.

Reuters reported that Mourinho said his previous achievements and failures were separate from his current objectives, while emphasising the need to build “stability” and a “strong structure” at the club.

Haaland Scores Twice as City Beat Porto

In Portugal, Erling Haaland scored twice as Manchester City defeated Porto 2-0 to make a winning start to their Champions League campaign.

The Norwegian striker headed City in front early in the second half before completing his brace in stoppage time to settle the contest.

The victory handed new City manager Enzo Maresca a winning start in the Champions League, after the visitors eventually found a breakthrough following a physical and goalless first half.

Haaland’s performance extended his impressive start to the season. He had already scored in each of City’s opening three Premier League victories before the trip to Portugal.

Maresca had acknowledged before the match that Haaland might need a rest after playing every competitive minute for City at that stage of the campaign, in addition to representing Norway at the World Cup.

The striker, however, once again delivered a decisive performance.

His first goal came through a header following a move involving Rayan Cherki and Enzo Fernández, while he completed his brace late in the match after connecting with a cut-back from Rayan Aït-Nouri.

Porto threatened at various stages but failed to find a way past City, while goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made crucial saves to keep the Portuguese side from getting back into the contest.

The victories give Real Madrid and Manchester City an early boost in the revamped Champions League league phase, with both European heavyweights claiming three points from challenging opening fixtures.
